Fit Feature: Lindsay Sprague
Fit Columbia and Midlands Anchor honors local women in fitness with a monthly feature celebrating their contributions to our midlands community. These women are the best of the best in the health and wellness industry. These women are local small business owners, active in the community and have a minimum of five years experience. Our February feature is Lindsay Sprague. Our feature is written by Addison Lewis, Fit Columbia Intern and University of South Carolina exercise science student.
Lindsay Sprague is a great example of women empowering women here in Columbia. She is a native of Durham, NC and received a B.S. in Accounting from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. While she was a student at UNCC, she was an important member of the Golddusters Dance Team. Immediately following her graduation, Sprague was hired by the University of South Carolina Athletics Department as the head coach of a brand new dance team, the Carolina Girls. She is now in her tenth season with The Carolina Girls Dance Team and the program continues to flourish.
In addition to her position with the Carolina Girls, Sprague worked full time in the Gamecock Club for more than eight years. She worked her way to becoming the Director of Membership Services and was in charge of gift administration and development reporting for the Athletics Department. Despite her successes in this role, Sprague knew something was missing. In September 2015, she left her full-time job, took a leap of faith and opened The Dance Floor, a dance studio for adults located in the Vista.
The Dance Floor offers a weekly schedule of dance classes including jazz, hip-hop, contemporary, tap and ballet with levels ranging from beginning to advanced. The Dance Floor also provides specialty classes that include a variety of styles including Shag, Salsa, line dancing, Hip-Hop & Heels and yoga. Classes are fun, informative, and a great way to break a sweat.
Q: What is your favorite class to teach here at The Dance Floor, and why?
A: I teach all of our jazz and hip-hop classes and I don’t think I can pick a favorite between the two styles. I will say, however, that while I love getting to teach challenging combos in our intermediate/advanced level classes, I really enjoy teaching beginners. Getting to share my passion for dance with someone who has never experienced it before is an incredible gift. Giving people a place where they can come out of their shell and find happiness while dancing is exactly why I opened The Dance Floor.
Q: Do you prefer cats or dogs?
A: Dogs! My 12 year-old mutt, Brinkley, is literally my BFF.
Q: Would you rather go to the mountains or the beach?
A: I’m 100% a beach bum. I’ve spent every summer of my life going to Atlantic Beach, NC with my family and it is my happy place.
I would highly recommend coming in for a class, it is such a comfortable atmosphere to let off some steam. The staff and clientele are all super friendly and it is definitely a judgment free zone. Whether you’ve taken a million dance classes or just interested in finding a way to workout, there is a class for you. Taking class was a great experience.
